Today I want to discuss a big topic that seems to be very popular. Lately, there’s been a huge conversation about nervous system regulation, the vagus nerve, somatic exercises, and grounding. But what does all of this really mean? And why is it so important?
Many people are realizing that chronic stress, pain, and emotional burnout aren’t just mental struggles—they are deeply physical experiences that affect the entire body, especially the nervous system.
From social media to wellness spaces, you may have heard terms like:
✔️ Vagus nerve activation
✔️ Somatic stretches
✔️ Grounding techniques
✔️ Frequencies for healing
These all connect to the same core idea: Your nervous system is not just about thoughts—it’s about how your body holds, processes, and releases stress.
Today, I want to walk you through how your nervous system responds to stress, why so many people feel stuck in a dysregulated state, and how you can reset and rebalance using natural techniques.
Why So Many of Us Are Stuck in Stress Mode
We are not meant to be in constant stress. But modern life has changed that.
Our bodies are designed for short bursts of stress, followed by rest and recovery. But today, most people are:
❌ Chronically overstimulated (screens, social media, deadlines)
❌ Emotionally & physically tense (unprocessed stress stays in the body)
❌ Disconnected from nature (artificial environments weaken nervous system resilience)
❌ Inflamed & exhausted (stress disrupts sleep, digestion, and hormones)
This constant stress keeps the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in overdrive, making it hard to:
- Relax & feel safe
- Digest food properly
- Heal from pain & injuries
- Get deep, restorative sleep
The solution? Learning to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)—the system responsible for recovery, relaxation, and repair.
This is where the vagus nerve, somatic movement, grounding, and frequencies come in.
The Vagus Nerve: Your Body’s Secret Reset Button
The vagus nerve has become a buzzword in wellness, but it’s not new—it has always been one of the most important nerves in the body.
The vagus nerve runs from the brainstem down through the throat, chest, heart, lungs, and digestive organs. It is the main communication pathway between the brain and body, controlling:
✔️ Heart rate & blood pressure
✔️ Digestion & gut health
✔️ Inflammation & immune function
✔️ Stress response & emotional regulation
When the vagus nerve is weak or underactive, we get stuck in fight-or-flight mode, leading to:
❌ Anxiety, tension, and poor sleep
❌ Digestive issues (bloating, IBS, slow digestion)
❌ Chronic pain & inflammation
❌ Brain fog and low energy
By stimulating the vagus nerve, we can shift back into rest-and-digest mode—helping our body feel safe, calm, and pain-free.
How do we do this? Through frequencies, movement, grounding, and somatic work.
⭐Somatic Exercises: Releasing Stress & Tension from the Body
Somatic exercises are movements that help release stored stress and tension from the nervous system.
Why does this matter?
Stress is not just mental—it lives in the body. When we experience trauma, chronic stress, or emotional overwhelm, our muscles and fascia hold onto it—causing tightness, pain, and nervous system dysregulation. There is not just a mental response but a physical response as well. Sometimes poor posture and alignment can also compromise the nerve.
Somatic exercises help:
✔️ Reset the nervous system by releasing stored tension
✔️ Improve vagus nerve function (especially breath-based somatic techniques)
✔️ Reduce chronic pain & inflammation
✔️ Regulate emotions (since stored stress affects mood)
Examples of Somatic Exercises:
✔️ Slow, intentional stretches (instead of forceful stretching)
✔️ Tremoring techniques (shaking to release trauma-stored energy)
✔️ Breathwork (activating the vagus nerve through slow breathing)
✔️ Micro-movements (gentle spinal waves, rolling, and rocking motions)
While somatic movement isn’t directly frequency-based, it works with the nervous system’s electrical signals to help release stored stress patterns.
How Frequencies Help Regulate the Nervous System
Your body is electrical—every nerve signal, muscle contraction, and heartbeat runs on frequency.
By using specific frequencies, we can stimulate healing, reduce pain, and regulate the nervous system.
Many of you are not new to this. If you have ever had therapy that uses a Tens unit or purchased a stimulation device have experienced how certain frequencies are used to create reactions in the body to reduce pain and swelling.
Pain & Inflammation Relief with TENS & Laser Therapy
- 2 Hz – 10 Hz → Releases endorphins for pain relief
- 100 Hz → Helps nerve regeneration and healing
- 830 nm Infrared Light → Reduces inflammation & accelerates recovery
Scientists believe that different frequencies of music can also trigger the brain and body to heal and repair.
Healing & Relaxation Through Sound Frequencies
- 432 Hz → Deep relaxation, stress reduction
- 528 Hz → Cellular repair, emotional healing
- 40 Hz → Supports brain function and neuroplasticity
Even listening to these frequencies can shift the nervous system out of stress mode. (If you have been in my office lately you may have noticed the intentional music change.)
Grounding & The Schumann Resonance (7.83 Hz): How the Earth Helps Reset the Body
When studying for my acupuncture certification I learned how we could attach leads to the needles and use specific frequencies to further intensify the desired treatment effects. I had learned the very same information about Tens and other therapeutic electrical modalities. What I found fascinating was that the Schumann Frequency, which is 7.83 Hz, when set on a modality could help improve a persons mood, clear qi blockages and create a sense of calm in the client.
Why is this important?
Have you noticed how spending time in nature makes you feel instantly calmer? One reason is the Earth emits a natural electromagnetic frequency called the Schumann Resonance (7.83 Hz).
This frequency matches the brain’s alpha waves, which are linked to:
✔️ Nervous system balance
✔️ Reduced inflammation
✔️ Better sleep & mood
The act of Grounding (earthing) reconnects us to this frequency.
Ways to Ground Naturally:
✔️ Walk barefoot outside (grass, sand, dirt)
✔️ Swim in natural bodies of water
✔️ Spend time in nature without electronics
What About Grounding Mats?
Grounding mats attempt to replicate the Earth’s charge, and some research suggests they can:
✔️ Reduce stress hormone levels (cortisol)
✔️ Improve sleep cycles
✔️ Decrease pain and inflammation
Before I commented on grounding mats I wanted to research the science and try one for myself. I noticed that it did help improve my sleep and mood. I found myself more calm after use. Is this a promisary claim? Not at all. I did physically notice a difference using it before bed. I found it also helped to improve some physical pains I was experiencing.
This is the one I tried from Amazon.
Will it work for everyone's pain? No, probably not. Just like a Tens unit may not help to relieve pain for all injuries. I did however, experience feeling of being more calm and balanced and looked forward to using it. This was my own personal experience and I also avoided using it for a week to see if I noticed a difference without. I did.
Not everyone should use grounding mats, especially those with:
❌ Pacemakers or medical implants (electrical interference)
❌ Electromagnetic sensitivity (some people feel overstimulated)
If you prefer a natural approach, direct skin-to-Earth contact is best.
Ultimately, I believe that incorporating nervous system regulation practises into your habits is just as important as eating well and moving your body.
Final Thoughts: How to Reset & Ground Your Nervous System
If you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or in chronic pain, your nervous system may need a reset.
Start by choosing one or two simple techniques to add to your daily routine:
✔️ Try vagus nerve stimulation (humming, deep breathing, cold exposure)
✔️ Listen to healing frequencies (528 Hz, 432 Hz)
✔️ Do 5 minutes of somatic movement (gentle stretching & breathwork)
✔️ Spend time grounding outdoors (or try a grounding mat if safe for you) or look into purchasing a grounding mat.
Your body is designed to heal—you just need to send it the right signals.
Let me know—have you tried grounding, vagus nerve activation, or somatic work? I’d love to hear about your experience!
