Calm Your Nervous System for Better Health & Energy
Hello Reader,
I hope you had a wonderful holiday with your friends and family!
Isn't it such a whirlwind leading up to it, though? I often feel like we are constantly on the go, rushing to get everything done. We do eventually accomplish our tasks, but the pace can take its toll.
Now that there is a lull, we should take this time to unwind. However, many people are unable to settle.
Ever feel like you wake up already stressed? Your nervous system could be in overdrive before your day even begins, impacting your energy, sleep, and digestion.
One Simple Morning Hack: Try an ice water face wash. Splashing your face with cold water first thing in the morning stimulates the vagus nerve, which helps:
- Lower stress levels
- Calm your nervous system
- Reduce inflammation
- Increase alertness without the jitters of caffeine
This small act signals to your body that it’s safe, shifting it from "fight or flight" mode to a more relaxed state.
Why Does This Matter?
Chronic stress and elevated cortisol can overstimulate your nervous system, affecting:
- Sleep (trouble falling or staying asleep)
- Digestion (bloating, poor gut health)
- Energy levels (constant fatigue)
When your nervous system is calm, your entire body functions better.
Other Ways to Calm Your Nervous System:
- Breathwork: Box breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4) activates the parasympathetic nervous system.
- Pilates or Gentle Movement like Walking: Mindful exercise grounds your body and mind. Want to try a free class? CLICK HERE
- Grounding Techniques: Walk barefoot on grass or sand for 5 minutes. ( I know not always possible in winter).
- Nutrition: Eat warm, nourishing foods to support digestion.
- Prioritize Rest: Short breaks throughout your day help reduce cortisol spikes.
One habit I try to do consistently is 10 mins of gentle activity every day. I will try incorporate10 minutes of Pilates, stretching or walking when ever I am able to get a quick break.
Your goals do not have to be grand! You just need to create small consistent habits daily and build on them. Just 10 exercises, or 10 minutes can make a difference both your physical and mental wellness.
